Historic Wimbledon poster reproductions

Throughout the last 100 years London's sporting calendar has always been well advertised by Transport for London. Many leading artists have designed posters for major annual events, such as Cup Finals, the Boat Race and Wimbledon Tennis Championships.

Wimbledon is acknowledged to be the premier tennis tournament in the world and remains the only Grand Slam event still played on grass.  The Championships are hosted by The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, a private club originally founded in 1868 as 'The All England Croquet Club'.  The history of the Club spans over 130 years and the first Lawn Tennis Championships was hosted in 1877.  This very first championship was a gentlemen's singles event, Spencer Gore was the first champion and 200 spectators each paid a shilling to watch the final round. By the turn of the century Wimbledon had assumed an international character and started to attract overseas players and larger audiences so that the ground was eventually moved, in 1922, to the present ground in Church Road.  Today, Wimbledon attracts an attendance of around 450,000 people and through press, radio and television, is followed by hundreds of millions around the world.
