This book is a superb portrait of the final years of main line steam operation on the Southern Region. Whilst it will have an obvious appeal to all those who remember the period, it will also have a resonance for those too young to have seen steam during these years but whose interest in the subject may have developed as a result of involvement in preservation, main line specials, or railway modelling.
