The Southern's slam door electric trains have been a familiar sight for decades, and have given excellent service to generations of travellers. A multiplicity of designs has operated including humble 2-car suburban units, the world-famous ‘Brighton Belle' Pullman trains and the extremely powerful ‘4 Rep' units that worked on the Bournemouth line. Simplicity, reliability and longevity were the hallmarks of this huge fleet which, in its heyday, totalled well over 1,000 units. Using the best available images, this all-colour album illustrates the various types that were in service from 1955-2005, when the bulk of the remaining units were withdrawn.
