The third of a series of five film programmes containing archive footage and tracing the story of steam locomotives during the middle years of the 20th century. This presentation looks at the war years that tested the railways and their locomotives to the limit, and then the 1948 Nationalisation that saw the end of the 'Big Four'. Post-war locomotive designs are seen along with older examples of steam traction.
