Howard Hodgkin is a contemporary painter of world renown. He has said of himself that he is 'a representational painter but not a painter of appearances. I paint representational pictures of emotional situations.'His later work is often seemingly abstract and painted in dense colours using a vibrant palette. He works in the Intimist tradition of Bonnard and Vuillard, believing that ordinary, intimate domestic scenes can be beautiful and are valid subjects for art. He taught at the Bath Academy of Art, Corsham (1956-1966) and at the Chelsea School of Art (1966-1972). He has also been Trustee of the Tate Gallery (1970-1976) and the National Gallery (1978-1985).
