Biography
John Burningham is one of England's most distinguished illustrators. After leaving school he spent two years travelling through Italy, Yugoslavia and Israel, where he undertook a variety of work. He returned to England to study for a National Diploma in Design before spending a year in Israel working on an animated puppet film. The following year he settled in England, establishing his career as an illustrator. He designed a number of posters for London Transport and contributed cartoons to the Radio Times. In 1963 he won the Kate Greenaway Medal for his first of many picture books.
