Porcelein printed mug; Design taken from old London Transport poster by Edward Johnston; Great gift item.
This fabulous mug has a printed design on it taken from an old London Transport poster. Big enough for a good sized cuppa but not so big you could take a swim in it. A pleasure to drink from and a pleasure to look at.
About the artist
1916 - Edward Johnston
In 1913 Frank Pick commissioned the typographer Edward Johnston to design a clear modern typeface for the Underground Group. The innovative result was inspired by the proportions of classical Roman lettering, based on square and circular forms. He later refined and used this in the first bar and circle Underground logo on station signs. The bold clarity of the typeface made it a perfect information tool, and was used on signage, postage, and publicity for nearly seventy years. Even today Transport for London continues to use an updated version of Johnston's original font know as New Johnston.
