About the artist:

Betty Swanwick (1915 - 1989) designed posters for London Transport 1936-1954. She was a painter, illustrator, designer and muralist. She was encouraged to draw from an early age by her father, the marine artisit Henry Gerard Swanwick. She painted in watercolour, illustrated her own novels, as well as designing posters for London Transport and an album cover for Genisis. In 1936 Swanwick began teaching at Goldsmiths College, where she was Head of Illustration between 1948 and 1961. She also taught at the Royal College of Art and the Royal Academy Schools.
