Notes: The formation of a unified London Transport in 1933 allowed development work to begin on well engineered buses and tube trains for the new organisation. The 1938 Tube stock was a particularly significant technological acheivement. Motors, wheelsets and control equipment were all designed in such a way that maximum space could be devoted to passenger capacity in the limited space that tunnels and platform lengths allowed on the deep level lines of the network. In addition, considerable design skills were employed to make the passenger environment as pleasant and functional as possible. The innovation was so successful that the design is widely considered a design classic and influenced tube train design for decades after 1938. London Transport Museum has an operational 4 car set of 1938 Tube stock (represented by this set of models) which makes occasional excursions on parts of the Underground network. The 4 cars are packaged in a decorative sleeve.
