S Stock S8 Underground Train Set (motorised)

London Transport Museum is pleased to offer this exclusive S Stock S8 model Underground train cars made for us by Bachman Europe PLC. These models are crafted on the new Metropolitan Line S Stock trains built by Bombardier in Derby and will become a recognisable sight on the London Underground for the next thirty years. Each model is built to a 1:76 (00) scale which makes them compatible standard model railways and accessories.

This set includes all cars required to make a replica S8 train. This configuration is exclusive to the Metropolitan Line and includes cars with additional seating to cater for longer distance services.

What’s included in the set?

You will receive 8 cars required to make up your S8 train based on the models below.

 • Driving motor A 21088
 • Driving motor B 21087
 • M1 car 22088
 • MS car 24087
 • M1 35-997
 • MS 35-996
 • M2 35-995

The Driving motor cars include an advanced low-line drive system which is invisible internally. They feature working headlights, tail lights, and illuminated destination display (Aldgate) which activates in the direction of travel. The motorised cars are powered by standard 12 volt adaptors which are available from model railway shops. The cars use a 21 pin DCC decoder socket.

The carriage cars are un-powered.

4 Car S Stock light & sound Set with under car spark effects and realistic door sounds also available.

The livery is based on the London Underground approved livery specification as of September 2014. Subsequent additions of external detailing are therefore not reflected in the actual models.

S Stock model trains are exclusive to London Transport Museum and cannot be purchased from any other retailer.

Both the main train boxes were damaged in transit, not the end of the world cos the boxes can be repaired. For what it was the model was generally overpriced. The four car @ £280 and the eight car @£480 was a high price to pay for something with no more lighting than the front and rear ends. Next to Bachmann's blue Pullman the "S" stock lacked the bells and whistles that Bachmann has latterly become synonymous with. The new special low slung motors are only three pole and are readily found in Bachmann's track maintenance vehicles. One of the wheels were out of the bogie frame, dislodged in transit but only because the low grade soft plastic was out of shape and allowed the axle to come away. It was necessary to go through the whole set and remove the wheels and gently squeeze the bogie frames into parallel and reset the pick ups prior to refitting the axles. The APT-E from Rapido Trains ran perfectly straight from the box without the slightest hint of " That bit needs tweaking" The car lighting that's available is far too expensive, I have perfected my own utilising the pickups on the carriage bogies and grain of wheat bulbs. Three to each car is quite sufficient. At around .05amps per bulb plus the .16amp current draw from the motors:- @9vlts total current is just over 1amp. No good for the HM2000 controller but fine if you use Bench Power Supplies:- 0 to 30vlts and 0 to 5amps. I guess at the end of the day that we should all be singing and dancing in the streets for this first ready to run tube train.

Excellent model, really high quality, completely amazing.

One little issue is for a full 8-car set you'll need a biggish layout to run it on with curves not too close together and you'll need flush, completely level track otherwise you might have issues as I do.

However, the coupling system is very clever and I love the addition of the optional traction tyre wheels, very happy by this.

High class model 5*.

I had troubles ordering and paying for my purchase on line with LTM. I emailed the helpline and Jen was ever so helpful. We managed the payment offline and delivery date was right on time. Thanks for your kind assistance. Going to have a very happy husband on Christmas day.

It takes a bit of time to get the cars in the correct sequence and getting the track level,am now running all 8 cars with no problem. It needs a large layout with long straights to accommodate the right length stations. liking the front and rear lighting.

I am very impressed with the S8 set. The look of it is just right, and it runs well. I hope the LT Museum shop will commission other RTR models of underground stock.

delighted with purchases and speed of delivery. It would be most useful to have royal mail delivery reference so I could have been at home for the delivery. I would certainly recommend the company.

Only tried trains on a test track as I am dismantling my existing 'N' gauge railway.

Both trains would no move on a flat surface in 8 car formation - wheel slip - Ran with no problems as four car train.

Will fit supplied traction wheels when I have new layout built.

Bit amazed there were no instructions on how to fit traction wheels on the driving cars!

Finish of the rolling stock is very good

It is as I expected first class, I have been waiting for years for something like this to come along.
I only hope they go further.

train looks very impressive running on layout

Brilliant model and super detail. 8 coaches forms a longer train than anticipated and the . Some wheels slightly displaced when unpacked but soon rectified. Coupling and uncoupling the train takes some practice due to limited access for the tool. There also is a set order to how the train is formed due to the couplings male / female design. Overall, excellent model and runs smoothly.

Overall I am pleased with the models. They are expensive and for this money I feel justified in nit-picking, so I will comment that I thought the interior detail might have been a bit better and the finish colour did not quite match the original (the white is very striking on the S stock, but seems a little muted on the model). However, these are minor points and I do not begrudge what I paid for what is an unusual model. If they were to produce other Metropolitan line or Metropolitan Railway models, I would happily purchase those based on the quality of this product.

The product is great, apart from my packaging comments above. However, having spent £439 on the complete 8-car set, I was VERY disappointed to discover that it's now included in the 15% off pre-Christmas sale, which is a £65.85 reduction. If I had have known, then I would have waited. Very unhappy bunny...

great model, well executed

Excellent model - as described. Disappointed that the additional internal lighting is so expensive - £89 and you need two kits!

Excellent

To produce the train was a brave move on behalf of LT Museum, As Len Goodman says on 'Strictly Come Dancing' one can always find fault, but why be too critical, Overall the model is a good representation of the full scale version. and will give pleasure to many Underground enthusiasts.in the future.

I am generally very pleased with this model. It is an incredibly accurate depiction of what it is meant to be. A few details have obviously been omitted to keep the costs down but these omissions do not bother me at all. All of the proportions of the model look excellent and the functioning headlights and destination displays are spot on. It is one of the best looking models I have - I am very familiar with the real thing so I can tell it looks right. I love the fact that the drive mechanism isn't visible through the windows of this model. I can overlook the fact that there aren't any interior saloon lights. If they had been present, clearly this would have pushed the price up. The coupling mechanism is very easy to use - a bit less fiddly than the couplers on some of the recent Bachmann and Hornby models. The closeness of the coupling between cars is very tight indeed and looks excellent. There are electrical contacts on the wheels of every "trailer" coach, so if I fancy making up some saloon lighting for the coaches at a later date, power can be taken from these. There is a lighting kit available from the LT Museum shop for this model but I won't make use of this myself as I feel the lighting is a little too white as in real life the saloon lights have a yellowish "warm white" glow. However, this would be a very convenient and hassle free conversion for those who do wish to buy it - from what I have read about it.
Some criticisms though: if you intend to run this as an 8 car train, I would definitely recommend putting the traction-tyred wheelsets on the motored bogies (there is a pair of wheels with traction tyres for each motor coach). This is quite easy to do, though. Also, one of the motor coaches has a noisy drive mechanism - even after a period of running in and some extra lubrication. Not a major problem, as there is a degree of variation between my other models. This might just settle down after a few more miles though. The boxes that this model comes in are incredibly tight and difficult to open without tearing them. Even before I opened the boxes when I first opened up the package when it arrived, some of the boxes were torn and crinkled on the corners. I really would have expected them to be pristine - being brand new!
In summary, this is an excellent model and a worthy addition to any layout. Not every single tiny detail has been replicated, that is true, but it is a lovely representation for its price. It is a smooth runner in dc mode and if, as I have done, you wish to convert to dcc, the 21pin decoders can easily be fitted by removing a cover on the underside of each of the driving motor coaches. Yes, this model requires two 21 pin decoders should you which to run it as dcc.
Features not replicated on the model but personally don't bother me are;
Cab interior should be dark grey
No shoe-gear on the Motor Shoe-gear coaches
No wider window pillar on one side of each Motor Shoe-gear (24xxx numbered car) where the wheelchair bay is.
There may be other items, but I haven't noticed them and therefore don't bother me enough to have noticed! Otherwise, this is a great model and I am delighted with it.

I love my S8 S-Stock, I have all 8 cars and she took a little bit of tinkering to get her running perfectly, but she runs beautifully now. I have the traction wheel set on one car only and both motor cars work well together. I recommend regular runs to keep it ticking over sweetly. The detail on the model is excellent and I've now added the Train-Tech interior lights and sound card. She really looks magnificent day or night. A very very special model. Pleased I bought one.

Really nice models. I have not run them yet but they capture the essence of the real thing. It was nice that the time from announcement of the model until delivery was so quick compared to some other models I have ordered. I look forward to the next commission.
