The Isle of Wight's once extensive railway system was reduced to one line by 1967. British Rail urgently needed to replace traditional steam traction and decided that, because of a very restricted tunnel at Ryde, the line between Ryde Pier Head and Shanklin would be electrified and second-hand Underground trains (designed for operation in small tunnels) would be purchased.
British Rail purchased additional, but more modern, 1938 stock Underground trains to update their fleet. In 1986, British Rail was divided into four sectors. The Isle of Wight line was included in the Network South East sector and a new livery of blue, red, white and grey was adopted. This 2 car train set is modelled in the colour scheme which lasted for ten years.
Although the Isle of Wight railway is now privatised and run by South West Trains, the classic London Transport 1938 Tube stock still operates and is now the oldest passenger rolling stock in regular use on Britain's railways.
