Central line

Another deep level tube, the Central line opened on 30 July 1900 as a cross-London route from Bank to Shepherd's Bush, and extended in stages to West Ruislip and Ealing Broadway in the west and Epping and Hainault (via both Newbury Park and Chigwell) in the east, largely using converted former British Railways lines. Another line from Epping to Ongar, again a former British Railways line, was for many years separately operated until closure in 1994. A further westward extension from West Ruislip to Denham was planned to be built after the Second World War but due to national austerity and changes in legislation creating a ‘green belt’ around London, was never constructed.
