London Underground leads the world in customer information design and display, particularly since unified graphic, typographic and art and design standards were formulated and applied after the formation of London Transport in 1933.
For Underground passengers, the provision of clear and purposeful tube line maps, variously also known as Car line diagrams or strip maps, are a dominant feature of every tube carriage on every tube line in London. The maps show all stations on each line
with supplementary information of interchange points, special opening times and more recently disabled access and fare zones.
The use of Transport for London’s unique New Johnston typeface, the special adaptation of the Harry Beck designed London Tube map and the predominant use of appropriate line colours makes these Car Line diagrams instantly recognisable to Londoners and visitors
alike.
Due to the level of detail on the tube line maps, we recommend these images are printed at A2 or a larger size.
