Frequently Asked Questions

Why has the Museum chosen this Underground rolling stock to model?

The new S Stock operates on all subsurface lines (Metropolitan, Circle, Hammersmith & City and District), and will be in service for a minimum of 30 years. The S Stock provides a template for new liveries in the future and therefore has wider potential appeal to existing and new modellers. Other Underground rolling stock types were fully considered for this key Museum investment but no other rolling stock type provides the flexibility for future livery variations.

The S Stock is set to remain technically largely unaltered during its working life.

Who has produced these models for London Transport Museum?

Bachmann Europe plc. are the manufacturers and have worked with London Transport Museum to produce these finely detailed models as an exclusive and highly collectable commission.

When will models ordered online be despatched?

Despatch commences on Tuesday 29 September 2015. The models will be despatched Royal Mail 1st class special delivery and will require a signature upon delivery. We are expecting a high level of demand so despatch will take some days to complete. We appreciate your patience during this period.

What are the models launched?

  • A four car boxed set including two motorised S Stock Driving cars and two centre cars.
  • Four individual cars that can be separately purchased to make an S7 or S8 car train as required.

Are the models available from any other outlet?

No – the S Stock models are exclusive to London Transport Museum and are unobtainable from Bachmann or any other retailer.

Is there an instruction sheet included?

  • Yes, in the four car set.
  • No, not in the Individual car boxes.

Is the train pack motorised?

Yes. Each Driving car is motorised with an advanced low-line drive system to make them invisible internally. This is a first for a model of its type. The two motorised cars will be sufficient to haul a full S8 train on a model railway layout.

What is the scale of the models?

The scale is 1:76 (OO) scale. This is the standard scale for model railways in Great Britain.

What track will the train run on?

Standard OO or HO scale track. HO track is identical to OO scale track.

What power supply is needed?

The model will work with a standard 12v model railway controller available from a local model shop with a plug suitable for your local mains electrical supply.

Is there special 4 rail model track available as per actual track on the Underground?

No, although specialist hobby suppliers may have suitable products available.

Are there working lights on the model?

The 4 car set has working headlights, tail lights and destination display that illuminate as appropriate to the direction of travel. There are no internal car lights on either the 4 car set or the individual cars.

The cars have plastic end filling, and the real train has walk through carriages. Why is this?

For structural integrity reasons. Without plastic end filling pieces the cars are much more vulnerable to damage.

Are the DVDs universal?

You can find the region of the DVD in its product description.

Where can I find the London Transport Museum store? Can I come to the shop without visiting the museum?
