Privatising Londons Buses

Between 1985 and 1995, the biggest change took place in London's buses since the formation of London Transport in 1933. The operation was reorganised into smaller, local companies, services were put out to competitive tender, and ownership of the bus fleet passed from public ownership into private hands. Fortunes were made and jobs were lost, but the overall result was a markedly better bus service at far lower cost. The style and operation of London's buses, and its performance, changed radically. This book tells the story of those changes, based on the personal experiences and reflections of those involved. 'This book tells the story of the foundations and the building of the extraordinary revival in the bus service of the world's greatest city. It is timed brilliantly; sufficient distance for a sober assessment of some difficult events, but still with personal memories able to be faithfully recounted. It tells the story of a fascinating and extraordinary period very well indeed, and uniquely does so through people's own words, comprehensively and with rigour. I can't believe there will be another book like it, and there doesn't need to be.' Sir Peter Hendy CBE, Transport Commissioner, TfL 2006-2015
