A beautiful floral poster designed by Betty Swanwick featuring a boutique of tulips and foxgloves attracting visitors to Kew Gardens, the Royal Botanic Gardens in Richmond. This is one of two versions commissioned by London Transport in 1937 that advertises Kew Gardens. Betty Swanwick designed posters for London Transport between 1936 and 1954. Betty Swanwick was born in London, the daughter of a marine artist. She studied at Goldsmith's College of Art under Clive Gardiner and Edward Bawden, the Royal College of Art, and the Central School of Arts and Crafts. From 1948-1969 she was a tutor at Goldsmith's College. She worked as a book illustrator, painter, designer for Shell-Mex, BP and the Central Office of Information and murals for Great Ormond Street Children's hospital and the Festival of Britain. She illustrated her own novels and became an RA (Royal Academician) in 1979. She was also elected a member of the Royal Society of Painters in Water Colour in 1976.
