In Watford by Edward McKnight Kauffer was designed for London Underground in 1915. This serene depiction of Watford offers travelers on Londons Underground a look into this tranquil oasis just waiting to be explored. The calming blues and greens, softly highlighted by the white of the bridge and continuing yellow of the path running across the centre of the image and leading the viewers eyes to the distance beyond.
Edward McKnight Kauffer was born in Great Falls, Montana, USA in 1890. Kauffers studied art at the Mark Hopkins Institute in San Francisco before moving to Paris in 1913. In 1914 Kauffer moved to London where he was commissioned in 1915 by Frank Pick to design his first poster for London Underground. Ultimately London Underground was to become Kauffer’s most important client before his death in 1954.
