This poster was designed for the Underground in 1914 by Tony Sarg. It advertises flying at Hendon. At the time, air displays and races were held there on most weekends. They were a popular way of bringing new technology to the attention of a wider public. In 1912, Hendon held its first aerial Derby. This race around London attracted an estimated 500,000 spectators. Sarg's poster depicts the commotion of a race day at Hendon. His witty caricatures capture the diversity of the audience for such events.
A painter, illustrator and caricaturist, Tony Sarg was born in Guatemala. Tony Sarg's family moved to Germany in 1887 and in 1911 he moved to England. In 1914 he became a member of the London Sketch Club. He illustrated several books while working in England. With the outbreak of war, he moved to New York. He worked for many magazines such as the Saturday Evening Post and designed mural paintings for hotels in New York. From 1935 until his death he designed window displays for Macy's department store. After moving to Nantucket he opened the Tony Sarg shop which sold many of his designs and toys. Much of his work is now in the care of the Nantucket Historical Collection.
