Regents Park Zoo, by Arnrid Banniza Johnston was produced for London Transport in 1930. Like numerous other posters at the time, Johnston calls riders of the Underground to the London Zoo, accessible via Camden Town and Chalk Farm Underground stations. Johnston’s depictions of the animals as visitors to the zoo and the humans on display is a dynamic twist to the actual dynamic of the popular destination and an exciting way to ensure rider’s of the Underground look twice at this poster. Arnrid Banniza Johnston was born in Sweden in 1895. Johnston came to London and studied at the Slade School of Art before beginning her career as a prolific artist who carved in marble and wood as well as a painter. Throughout Johnston’s works, animals are a recurring theme, not surprisingly her works for London Transport which she designed between 1930-1935 include several for London Zoo. Arnrid Banniza Johnston died in 1972.
