This powerful artwork by Leonard Raven-Hill calls on boys and men from 15 to 40 years of age to join the Navy. Men and boys are needed to join the Navy as ‘Watchers of the Seas.’ This dark piece by Raven-Hill shows a young man in the foreground looking out over the violent seas from aboard a ship, with his powerful stance the young soldier shows no sign of fear as he surveys.
The grey and blue colours used in the typically marine scene, add a moody atmosphere to the poster.
The artist was Leonard Raven-Hill who studied at Lambeth School of Art. After spending two years in Paris at the Academie Julian, he returned to Britain where he spent much of his career as an illustrator for periodicals including: The Daily Chronicle, Punch, The Sketch, The Strand Magazine and the Daily Graphic.
In later life he spent much of his time supervising work on his farm in Wiltshire.
