Edward McKnight Kauffer designed three posters in the Whitsuntide series in 1925 published by the Underground Group. These brightly coloured posters feature Whitsuntide scenes, a religious festival. Whitsun is the seventh Sunday after Easter which commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon Christ’s disciples. Edward McKnight Kauffer designed posters for the Underground Group and London Transport between 1915 and 1939. Born in 1890 in Great Falls, Montana, USA, Edward Kauffer studied art at the Mark Hopkins Institute in San Francisco, and then in Paris in 1913, where he was sponsored by Professor McKnight of the University of Utah. In 1914 he came to London, and the following year was commissioned by Frank Pick to design his first poster. London Underground was to become his most important client.
