This atmospheric publicity poster was published by the Underground in 1924. The painting, by Verney L Danvers, depicts a City street scene at night. As hazy dark figures make their way through the thick winter's fog, the only prevailing light comes from the bright red Underground symbol. The familiar and iconic roundel sign shines through the mist, inviting passengers in 'where it is warm and bright'. Verney L Danvers designed posters for the Underground Group and London County Council Tramways (LCCT) between 1922 and 1929. Verney L Danvers, full name Verney Lionel Danby Danvers, was a British graphic designer and commercial artist best known for designing posters for London Transport and railway companies such as London & North Eastern Railway, Southern Railway and British Railways. He was born in 1895 in Lisbon, Portugal.
