Shopping in Southall
Esther Cox was commissioned to highlight some of the shopping delights to be experienced in London's suburbs. After discussion, Transport for London and Esther easily decided to choose Southall (a vital West London suburb with a large South Asian community) to feature fabric shopping with more than a passing reference to richness of South Asian fabrics for sale in the many colourful shops to be found there. Esther also paid homage in her new work to the famous London Underground Summer Sales poster of 1924 which highlighted shoppers sifting through colourful piles of clothes.
