London's Lidos Charlton

Artist Julia Allum wanted to hark back to the golden age of lidos and create a contemporary take on 1930s poster art. As there were no grand architectural features Julia chose to use the colourful bunting strung across the pool as her starting point. This along with the sun provides the main focus for the image. Concentrating any detail along a central strip keeps the illustration clean and uncluttered. Julia hopes the finished design conveys a feeling of warm summer days leaving the viewer wanting to visit and take a refreshing dip in the water.

Charlton Lido first opened in 1939, but was closed just 4 months later due to the outbreak of the second world war. Reopening in 1946 it remained popular until declining revenue and increasing costs meant it closed to the public in 1989. It had been used sporadically during these intervening years by local clubs, but it wasn’t until 2013 when following a refit using Olympic legacy money that it reopened to the public. About the artist: Since graduating from Falmouth college of arts 20 years ago Julia has worked in various styles across advertising, publishing and packaging. It is however only recently that she has truly found her niche with her big, bold style. Winning the Silver Award in the Association of Illustrators & London Transport Museum’s prize for illustration in 2017 proved to be a catalyst and she hasn't looked back since.
