Simply London - Double Crown

Jake Sutton is one of Britain’s leading contemporary painters, regularly exhibiting in London since 1977. Born in 1947, at the age of seven he won the Daily Express National Children’s Painting Competition. He went on to study painting at Saint Martin’s School of Art, London. Through numerous solo exhibitions, spanning some forty years as a professional painter, the artist is best known for his light-filled watercolours and exuberant colourful oils. His signature is his deceptive ease when capturing movement, whether in the flight of the dancer or the swiftness of the horse. For eighteen months Jake Sutton worked as painter of ‘The Royal Opera House Collection’, working with Royal Ballet productions at Covent Garden, London. His work is in many collections, including the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Palace of Westminster. Some eighteen paintings were purchased for the permanent collection of the House of Commons. He was commissioned by Royal Mail to create four sporting motifs for a set of commemorative stamps, issued in 1988. In 1999 he was commissioned by London Transport to paint a watercolour for a poster to mark the millennium.
