Simply Royal

Stephen Beckett Whatley is an English painter, born in London in 1965. He specialises in expressionistic oil paintings and his subjects include cityscapes, landscapes, architecture, still life, portraits and Christian works. Notable works include a series of vitreous enamel panels at Tower Hill commissioned by Historic Royal Palaces. Simply Royal is his only poster commissioned by London Transport. It highlights Buckingham Palace, then newly opened to the public in the summer months. London Transport was asked by Buckingham Palace to help publicise the first opening of Buckingham Place during the summer months to the public by commissioning and displaying posters on the Underground, although Buckingham Palace didn’t pay for the commission or for the poster printing. The wider Simply Royal marketing campaign highlighted all other Royal Palaces and places of interest in London.

The 'Simply' series of posters were commissioned by London Transport for their principal marketing campaigns between 1995 and 2000. The campaigns were instigated by Geoff Ellerton, Director of Marketing for London Transport at that time, and his Head of Advertising and Publicity, Charlie Edelman. Every commission was used for posters, leaflets, and various other marketing activities and many of the images used were highly popular with the travelling public. Shortly after the formation of Transport for London, the 'Simply' campaign ended.
