Take the Tube to the Park

From 1977 until 1986 no 'art' posters were produced by London Transport. After a long recession and with reduced numbers of passengers using the Underground, commercial advertisers were increasing reluctant to book advertising space. Unsold sites were covered in black paper, which made an already scruffy system seem even gloomier. A new Director of Marketing was appointed, Henry Fitzhugh, who immediately set about improving the appearance of the Underground stations. One of his initiatives was to employ artists to produce posters for display on unsold advertising spaces. One of the earliest of this new series of posters was 'Take the Tube to the Park'.
