When the Underground extension of the Piccadilly line to Heathrow Central Underground Station (now Heathrow Terminals 1, 2, 3) opened in 1977, the new station featured the original version of this striking mural. Created by the definitive graphic designer of the times, Tom Eckersley, it refined the design of the iconic Concorde supersonic airliner to a sleek and simple four-colour graphic. In 2011, the station was re-opened after renovations and this new, updated colourway was revealed. This limited edition print has been created on the occasion of the 150 year anniversary of the Underground in 2013.
Tom Eckersley helped to define the style of London Transport, designing posters, station decoration, and graphics for timetables, events, and on-board information signage for buses and tube trains for 60 years (1935-1995). His work was prolific and helped shape the style of the times. He is perhaps best known by Londoners today for his bright and colourful tile designs that decorate some of the platforms along the Victoria Line.
