*Please note: as reflected in the image shown, the original print has smudging in bottom left corner which will transfer to re-printed image* Designed by Edward Bawden in 1939 for London Transport, this poster depicts the cactus gardens and hothouses in Kew Gardens. The aim of the poster is to give information on how to get to Kew by bus or trolleybus. The oranges and greens in the poster giving a feel of the natural desert habitat of the cacti plants in the forefront of the poster. Edward Bawden was born in Essex and studied at the Cambridge School of art and the Royal College of Art, London. At the Royal College of Art his tutor was Paul Nash who had a strong influence on Bawden’s work. Edward Bawden became a very successful illustrator and graphic designer. He worked as a freelancer for many organisations and went on to teach graphic design at the Royal College of Art.
