A poster designed by Edward McKnight Kauffer in 1921 for Underground Railways Electric Company Ltd., to advertise shopping in the quieter travelling times in central London – between 10am and 4pm. The poster is in Kauffer’s cubist style.
Edward Kauffer was an American artist who studied in San Francisco and Paris, before coming to London in 1914. In 1915 he was commissioned by Frank Pick to design his first poster and following on from this London Underground became his most important client, for whom he designed numerous distinctive posters. Kauffer’s distinctive cubist posters and geometric, colourful compositions aroused both attention and controversy when they were exhibited as London Group shows.
