Charles Paine produced this vibrant image entitled ‘Uxbridge’ for the Underground Electric Railway Company Ltd in 1921. The swiftly swimming fish moving in the same direction represent the commuting culture of the time and the speed at which the London Underground moved you from city working to the wildlife of the suburban countryside. Charles Paine studied at Salford College of Art and the Royal College of Art. He later taught at Edinburgh College of Art. His poster designs for the Underground were mainly the result of his association with the Baynard Press for whom he produced posters and other graphic designs for a large range of companies.
