A springtime poster with three children as the focus of the design is promoting taking children out in the springtime ‘to see the flowers and hear the birds’ on the ‘General’ buses to the outside spaces in the city of London. It was designed in 1925 by James Henry Dowd for the Underground Railways Electric Company Ltd. Posters advertising days out by tube, bus or tram, were prominently displayed at station entrances and on the vehicles themselves. They include some of the most attractive and evocative posters produced by the Underground/London Transport.
James Henry Dowd was a draughtsman, etcher and painter who specialised in illustrations of children. He was a regular contributor to The Graphic and from 1906 he contributed to Punch and later became the magazine's first film cartoonist.
