This highly stylised poster of Hampstead by Harold Sandys Williamson was produced in 1922, by the Underground Electric Railways Company Ltd., to promote travel to the country. This style of poster was very popular for travel posters in the 1920s. The stylised technique was employed by Williamson in the foreground of the poster, with a charming house nestling between the rolling hills of Hampstead. Beyond this is a coloured suburban dream with London rooftops fading into the sky of grey sea. Williamson often used the pseudonym ‘Florian’ and this poster was signed ‘Florian’.
Harold Williamson was born in Leeds in 1892 and studied at the Leeds School of Art. After this he studied at the Royal Academy Schools where he won the Turner Gold Medal. During WW1 he served with the King’s Royal Rifle Corps as a war artist and after went on to exhibit at the New English Art Club (NEAC) and the Royal Academy (RA). Williamson produced commercial work for several organisations including Shell and was Headmaster of the Chelsea School of art between 1930 and 1958.
