An attractive spring Bluebell poster designed in 1930, one of many to advertise Kew Gardens. Bluebells are used in several Underground posters as a subject matter. This was a panel poster which was designed to be displayed in Underground car interiors, as well as on the inside and outside of buses and trams. Because they did not have to fit a standard frame or wall space they are smaller than other poster formats and vary slightly in size.
The poster was designed by Irene Fawkes who was born in Chelmsford in Essex where she went on to study at Chelmsford School of Art and was awarded the silver medal by the City and Guilds of London Institution. Irene Fawkes was a commercial designer who worked for Poole Pottery and a part-time teacher at the Sir John Cass Technical Institute. She designed posters for the Underground Group and London transport from 1923 to 1935.
