Fabulous fruit and vegetables in Brixton Market
London Transport Museum continues the glorious tradition established in 1908 of commissioning great contemporary designers, artists and illustrators to produce posters for display on the Underground.
The Museum opened its Poster Girls exhibition in 2017 which ran until March 2019. The exhibition marked the enormous contribution of women artists and designers to the history of London’s transport posters. Not surprisingly, most of the Museum’s current poster commissioning is devoted to using great women illustrators, in this case Julie Westbury, to interpret interesting briefs designed to make Londoner’s aware of interesting destinations outside Central London. Julie’s specific brief was the great variety of fine foods, fruits and vegetables to be discovered in South London.

“We all go shopping but when I visited Brixton and East Dulwich, shopping was all about the local communities, sharing different cultural tastes with friends and family
When getting off the bus in East Dulwich, the food smells hit you. Forget the diet and indulge yourself. Each bakery, cake and cheese shop has an individual way of producing, decorating and displaying their produce, an enormous choice.
Leaving the Tube and entering Brixton Market is like going into a museum, many top quality exotic objects arranged in front of you, from tiny orange turmeric root too giant yellow jackfruit. The vibrant colours and textural displays, made me feel I was in a hot climate, not the cold winter of the U.K.
