One of the many Kew Gardens posters, this advertises the opening times of the Cactus House in Kew Gardens which were from 10am until sunset with an admission cost of 1d! The poster depicts a cactus plant and flower scene of oranges and greens to entice the Londoners to visit. The poster was produced in 1935 for London Transport and was designed by John Barker, who signed some of his work in the late 1930’s as Kraber – as he did with this poster. John Barker was born in Leicestershire in 1911 and studied at the Leicester School of Art. He gained a travelling scholarship from the International Guild of Decorators and thus travelled to Italy and Paris. In 1934 he became a graphic designer and was an assistant of Austin Cooper. After serving in the Royal Navy during the Second World War he designed posters, textiles and magazines.
