Metropolitan Railway No 1 Steam Train Poster

This poster was produced by Paul Vizzari for London Transport Museum as part of London Underground’s 150th anniversary celebrations. The Steam locomotive in the poster is former Metropolitan Railway No. 1 which was built in 1896 and is now preserved by the Buckinghamshire Railway Centre at their base at Quainton Road Station in Buckinghamshire, once at the outer of end of the Metropolitan (and later London Transport) railway network. The landscape is a homage to rural Buckinghamshire, and particularly noteworthy is the depiction of Quainton windmill, an important local landmark in the village once served by London Underground's Metropolitan line.

The steam Locomotive was used by London Underground to haul special trains on London Underground during 2013. The first vehicle depicted behind the locomotive is the preserved Metropolitan Railway milk van owned by London Transport Museum, and the second carriage is Metropolitan Railway 353, an 1892 First Class carriage also owned by London Transport Museum and beautifully restored by Ffestiniog Railway with substantial support from the Heritage Lottery Fund in time for London Underground's 150th celebrations.
