Extension of the Piccadilly Line to Heathrow Airport 30x40 Print
Tom Eckersley was one of Britain's foremost poster designers and between 1935 and 1995 he produced over 70 different poster artworks for London Transport.
The Piccadilly line was extended from Hounslow West to Heathrow Central in 1977 and this artwork was commissioned as construction work commenced.
The roundel forms the central element in Tom Eckersley's 1971 poster design. Eckersley transforms the look of the roundel, almost reversing the familiar colour range, to create a powerful visual message.
The yellow bar of the symbol is used to represent the rapid progress of the new line as it swept across West London.
