This poster was commissioned by the Underground Electric Railway Company in 1920. As well as encouraging travel to the International Advertising Exhibition at the White City, the image reminds advertisers to make use of the promotional spaces available at stations. The image features a range of characters from advertising campaigns popular in the 1920s, many of which are still recognisable. The Bisto Kids, Mr Punch, Johnnie Walker and Bibendum the Michelin Man are all waiting patiently on the platform. The little dog is Nipper, who was taken from the painting 'His Master's Voice' and used as the Gramophone Company's trademark. He is now known as the trademark and namesake of associated company H.M.V. Others include, Cardinal Furniture Polish (or Cardinal Wolsey Shoe Polish), Kodak Girl, Pears Soap Tramp, Rowntree’s Coca Nibs Kids, Skipper Sardines, Punch, VIM, Youngers Beer Man and Guinness Face. Wood Lane Underground station was renamed Wood Lane (White City) in 1920. It became simply White City, as it is known today, in 1947. Fredrick Charles Herrick designed posters for the Underground Group between 1920 and 1933. F C Herrick studied at Leicester College of Art and Crafts and the Royal College of Art. He designed the famous Wembley Lion logo for the British Empire Exhibition in 1924 and he also worked as a painter.
