An autumnal poster by Charles Shepard, circa 1926, for the Metropolitan Railway, to advertise spending a day in Metro-land in the autumn. Information is given on the poster to purchase ‘Metro-Land for 2d from booking offices or book stalls. ‘Metro-Land’ was the name of the annual publication of the railway’s booklet which described the area of the railways served through north-west London spreading into Middlesex, Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire.
The artist Charles Shepard was born in 1892. In later years he became the head of the studio at the Baynard Press. He designed posters for the Underground Group and London Transport from 1924 to 1960 and designed posters for the British Railways Southern Railway and the Royal Mail Packet Steamship Company.
