This poster, in pastel colours, depicts the Columbia Road Flower Market and captures the vibrant atmosphere of the market which takes place every Sunday morning in Bethnal Green in the East End of London. On Sundays the street is transformed into an oasis of flowers and plants which attracts many Londoner’s and visitors alike. This poster was commissioned in 1987 by Art on the Underground and the artist was Kay Gallwey. Kay Gallwey was born in London in 1936 and studied at the City and Guilds and Goldsmith’s Schools of Art, and the Royal Academy. This artist paints in pastels and oils and has also designed costumes for theatre, films and television.
