‘To Lovers’ Lanes by Motorbus’ was produce for the Underground Electric Railways Company Ltd in 1921 by Christopher Richard Wynne Nevinson.
This image in subtle blues and creams, with a strong orange border, suggests you can find love and romance in London whilst using public transport to take you to the quieter parts of the city. The soft blues, pinks, yellows and orange set the romantic scenery for a pair of lovers who have travelled by motor-bus to Lovers’ Lane.
CRW Nevinson was born in Hampstead in 1889 and studied at St. John’s Wood School of Art. His early paintings were mildly impressionist, however, as his friendships grew with Italian Futurists his art became profoundly influenced by them and he went on to exhibit with such artists. CRW Nevinson was one of the first artists to paint shocking paintings of the First World War and the first significant pictures of his, with this subject matter, were exhibited at the London Group Exhibition in 1915.
He designed posters for the Underground Group and London Transport between 1921 and 1939.
